STUDENTS + PARENTS + COMMUNITY
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Announcements
Reading & Writing
READING:
Our first story is Blasting Off to Space Academy. Our target skill is using text and graphic features to assist in comprehension. We are also working on various skills: long/short vowels, prefixes, and different types of sentences.

KidBiz:
Students will be using Achieve again this year. It is suggested that students utilize this program at home as well as in school. I will assign an article that is related to the story we are reading. This assignment must be done during our centers, and not at home. However, students can participate in Ms. Joseph's weekly challenge by completing 5 or more activities with a score of 80% or higher on first try!

Writing
Students will begin this year writing narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective techniques, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. They will understand the type of writing that they will be asked to produce on the PARCC. A Narrative Task requires students to write a story based on a given text and prompt. Students will learn the difference between literature and informational text, and that Narrative doesn't only mean "fiction" writing, but also includes "nonfiction".
Math
Math
Students will begin the year with place value, multiplication, and expressions. It is very important that students practice the skills everyday. They will be asked to apply what they have learned, and not just isolated computation. They need to know all their math facts remotely and if not, practice. There is a math help board if your child is struggling with homework. Please do not hesitate for assistance.
Homework
All homework is written daily in their planners. Homework will be relevant to what has been taught in class and/or related to what we are learning. All homework is due the next day, unless otherwise noted. Students should be reading every night for at least 20 - 30 minutes!
